Fishing

We love eating our local catch and want to share this fresh seafood with you. We target rock fish and lobster in late fall and winter, white seabass, yellowtail and halibut in the spring and early summer, and tuna and swordfish in the late summer and fall. We will be taking longer trips south in the mid-summer to take advantage of the blue fin tuna bite that Southern California has been blessed with each summer for private blue fin tuna expeditions. We will be targeting the larger fish using a combination of our outriggers when trolling to locate the fish, and kite fishing techniques when we find them.

Lobster Hoop Netting

The California Spiny lobster is the best tasting lobster in the world. You can’t find it on our local menus because most of these are exported to Asia as they pay top dollar for our local lobster and sea urchin for uni. Because this industry is so profitable, the commercial fisherman have lobster traps up and down the coast and at the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. In order to compete with their expertise, we use bait tubes custom made by first mate Neil and bait them with very oily bait, sardines and anchovy, to attract these bottom scavengers.

Hiking

Anacapa, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa all offer day hiking opportunities for exploring their undisturbed natural habitats. We are early risers and are the perfect choice to maximize a single day with a very early drop off and a late in the day pickup at whichever island you choose. Hikers can enjoy seeing the local brown pelicans, island fox, various flora and fauna that can only be found on the Channel Islands during their hiking. These day trips are very popular not only for nature lovers, but for athletes training for their next marathon or triathlon, as the amazing views will keep you inspired to prepare for your next competition.

Whale Watching

Pods of dolphin jumping and various species of seals are almost constant attractions on any trip. During the late fall and winter months, migratory whales coming through the Santa Barbara Channel are a once in a lifetime treat to see. These gentle giants are spectacular to see and like giving us land lubbers a show while breaching and showing off their massive flukes.

Seakeeper

Imagine fishing, whale watching, throwing back a cold one and enjoying a great day without having to worry about you or anyone in your party getting motion sickness. We want to do all we can to ensure each voyage is as enjoyable as possible, that’s why our vessel is equipped with Seakeeper technology! What is a Seakeeper you ask? Imagine being on a boat and you can flip a switch and the boat stops rocking. While it may seem like magic, its science at its best, the Seakeeper is a gyroscope that stabilizes the boat and takes away 90% of the roll caused by the ocean swells, the same way a spinning top is stable. We can’t predict the weather, but we can do all we can to ensure the comfort and safety of everyone onboard BB Pelagic.
